The Refuge is meant to be a place anyone can come into. We want every member to be able to find a class, book it, join it, watch a recording and take part in the community, whatever device they use and however they use it.

What we aim for

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA, the standard most widely used for websites.

What we do

  • Every change to the site is checked automatically against WCAG 2.1 A and AA on the pages members and staff use.
  • Text is set in colors chosen for contrast, and buttons and links are large enough to tap on a phone.
  • Pages are built to be used with a keyboard, and every page starts with a link that skips to its content.
  • Recordings carry captions, and our team can review and correct them.
  • Moving backgrounds can be paused, and they stay still if your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Class times are shown in your own time zone, which you can change.

What we know is not there yet

  • We have not yet tested the site with screen readers such as VoiceOver, NVDA or JAWS. We plan to, and until then some things may be announced less clearly than they should be.
  • We have not yet worked through every page using a keyboard alone.
  • Captions on recordings are made automatically at first, and may contain mistakes until our team has reviewed them.
  • Live classes happen on Zoom, whose own accessibility features and limits apply while you are in a class.

Tell us

If anything here is hard to use, or you need something in another form, please write to us at connect@therefuge.community. Tell us the page and what happened, and we will work with you to make it right.
